Atostek’s ERA Image Viewer makes CDs a thing of the past – radiology images finally travel with the patient
In Finland, transferring radiology images between healthcare providers has long been slow, laborious and challenging from a patient safety perspective. Atostek’s ERA Image Viewer solves this problem: images can be viewed wherever the patient is being treated – without CDs, delays or unnecessary repeat imaging.
Developed by Atostek, ERA Image Viewer is Finland’s first solution for retrieving and viewing medical images from the national Kanta Image Data Repository.
Images available wherever the patient is treated
In accordance with the national Kanta architecture, patients’ images are available across organisational boundaries whenever required for their care. This is important, for example, when a patient has undergone imaging through occupational healthcare or following an accident in another wellbeing services county, while follow-up care takes place in their home region or is provided by a specialist healthcare provider.
ERA Image Viewer is a CE-marked medical device that can be used to view medical images for diagnostic purposes – not merely for reference viewing. The solution is also suitable for situations where using a PACS is not an option. A single viewer supports multiple modalities: ERA Image Viewer can be used to retrieve and view X-ray, MRI and CT images, as well as ECG data.
With ERA Image Viewer, images open quickly, without problems reading discs, manual transfers or the inconvenience of moving data from one system to another. When previous images are immediately available to the healthcare professional providing treatment, unnecessary repeat examinations can be avoided and clinical decision-making accelerated. This reduces patients’ exposure to radiation while saving healthcare resources and costs.
Terwe adopts ERA Image Viewer
Finnish medical services provider Terwe has adopted ERA Image Viewer. The solution enables imaging data stored in the national archive to be used seamlessly in support of patient care.

Radiology examinations performed by another service provider or wellbeing services county, together with their reports, can be accessed effortlessly through the viewer, eliminating the hassle of transporting CDs. The ability to view ECG recordings made by other service providers also considerably improves patient care, as new recordings can be compared with previous ones directly in the viewer,” says Lauri Nuorva, Medical Director at Terwe.
A browser-based solution without complex system dependencies
ERA Image Viewer is easy to deploy. It is a browser-based solution that works on a standard computer using an ordinary web browser. Its deployment does not require integration with a specific electronic health record system or local PACS.
ERA Image Viewer has successfully completed Kanta joint testing and is already in production use.
